History's Mysteries

It amazes me what 20 somethings don't know these days. The other day I was talking to two young ladies, both about 20, one of whom is going to college, and I got on the subject of history.

Me: It's amazing how little your generation knows about history. A lot of people your age don't even know who we fought in the Revolutionary War.

Girl 1: It was that Hitler guy, right?

Me: Oh you are joking right? How about the civil war, do you know who fought in that?

All that I got out of that was two blank looks.

Me: How about George Washington, do you know who he was?

Girl 2: I know he was a president

Girl 1: They named a bridge after him, right.

At that point, all I could do was sit back and marvel at the new generation. I may not be
smarter than a 5th grader, but I surely knew more than these high school graduates!

what scares me is that some of these idiot 20-somethings are going to be teaching my son!

one of my sorority sisters was an ed major and thought the french and indians fought in the revolutionary war...

and she thought that new orleans was in paris, which she believed to be its own country...where they spoke spanish.

Have you been busy lately?

Don't take too long to post! I miss reading you. :)

Fair enough. But who is George Washington?

Every time I ask a President in my class, I either get George Washington or Abraham Lincoln. Nice.

I would scoff but I suck at history myself.

What I'd like to know is how they got their high school dipolamas?!

Makes you wonder how effective our 'future' will be since children are our future, eh? ;)

Although I do have to say I learned a LOT more about history AFTER I graduated because my high school history teacher SUCKED pond water. There really is something to be said about GOOD teachers and teachers that CARE about their students learning like my Honors English and Math teachers. :)

A lot of people think I'm smart, because I know more than they do. I think a lot of people are stupid because they stopped learning! I don't appreciate what I know- I'm more interested in learning the vast amount of information out there that I am still ignorant of....

Those two girls will be your bosses some day, so be nice.

I thought I hadn't paid attention but that is serious ignorance there! Wow!

Several years ago, my step-daughter went with us to the theater to see a play about the Civil War called North and South. At one point she actually asked us which side won the war. The really sad thing is, she has Masters' Degree. I'm thinking that college owes her a refund.

Oh dear! Thats not good.

Lets hope they learn a bit more before their education is finished, otherwise we may all be doomed!!!!

You just need to find their strong points. Did you ask about Twilight -- New Moon? I'll bet they know it all. LOL

I used to be surprised by people like this. But, not anymore. I've met too many people just like these two girls.

Oh and I found you so I guess you'll have to move again. LOL ;-)

20 years ago - I was at the university in the student center with one of my friends, and we were sitting with some random guy who was studying for a final in his history class. His major was history - and he was very upset. We asked what was wrong - he said, the study outline mentions World War 2 - there were 2 of them?

I couldn't make that up. We were appalled.

I blame the teaching to the test mentality. If it's not on the standardized tests, they don't care if the kids know it or not.
