I am hoping the casino will bring in visitors to shop at our cheesy strip malls, use our empty hotels, and dine at our pedestrian restaurants boosting the central Ohio economy. At worst, the mega casino will be demolished due to lack of business. Others are horrified by the possibility of a casino which I just do not understand? The city is fueling up for a fight to keep the casino away which will cost $$ that we do not have.
My husband is on the NIB (not in my backyard) side of the fence. He felt a casino would attract crime and vagrants. Vagrants? We already have homeless downtown. Crime? We have that too!! I think we can handle a bus load of tourists looking to blow their paycheck for no good reason.
Tell me if I am missing something?? I say bring on the folly of a casino.

They're building them right and left in MI too. I agree that the thrill is gone when it only takes 20 minutes to get there. We have 3 near me now. But, I never felt like there was a crime issue. Those things are so securely wrapped up.
We went through that whole scenario here in Small Town PA, too - so many people were against it, but in reality the casinos were supposedly going to reduce our property taxes. So far we haven't seen crime or vagrancy on the rise (though they're not technically in our backyard, they're in another township) but we keep getting promised that we'll see a reduction in our property taxes in the coming years. We'll see.
For the most part? Adding casinos to various townships hasn't been a bad thing at all - crime hasn't gone up, nor has vagrancy. I'd think your town hall would prefer to not spend money they don't have and see if the casinos bring money they wouldn't have. ;)
I have libertarian tendencies when it comes to gambling. I generally reject the Nanny State notion that our government has to protect us from ourselves. Why should I be prevented from playing blackjack or poker or placing bets on sporting events just because some other people can't control their own gambling habits?
But, I do admit that when I went to the casinos in Shreveport, LA back in the day, I was amazed at all the kids who were dropped off at the ice cream parlor and game rooms while their parents were gambling their college fund away. ;-)
I'm all for the BRING IN VEGAS! But then again, Hubby's territory is Vegas so we have a lot of Vegas sayings in our house. Plus I don't gamble...
Hell, with it, I love gambling! Bring it on! I wish there was a casino close to me!
I've never gambled and never gone inside a casino before!
It scares me I might become an addict or something! haha
I had no idea you owned a cheesy strip mall.
Good points - it will bring business to the town. And for people that don't like gambling, they can stay away. And it's a good place for the gambling element to congregate, better than on the streets.
Eileen,
At least mom will have a reason to get out of bed in the morning now.

In this economy, anything's worth a try... although I feel bad for the people who are struggling and lose their hard earned money at the casinos.
Casinos should help bolster the flagging prostitution trade.
The casino will provide jobs and bring in tourists. I don't see where more crime or more homelessness will occur. My two cents.
Vagrants don't have any money but I can see the crime escalating, maybe by vagrants mugging the wannabe casino-goers?!
job creation...though it may cost a few people theres at the tables...
Casinos are like whore houses, nobody drags you in, but the local economy benefits from them from secondary spending.. An affordable alternative to flying to Vegas, even though the odds are worse..
I don't like slots much, money sucking things, but I do like roulette.
However, I've never been drawn to take the bus to Atlantic City to just play.
I'd say as long as they're nice big casinos then it's a great way to bring in money. We have a few large ones that are fun to go to, have several restaurants and other entertainment. However, we also have a few tiny, grungy ones for the riff-raff. those -- not so good.
We lived in a small rural community in Kansas. There was not a place to go for entertainment or a decent meal. We moved to this small rural community in Oklahoma surrounded by about a million Indian Casinos, none further than 30 miles and the closest 7 miles. We can pick a day, any day, to drive to our casino of choice for delicious food (I'm talking Alaskan King Crab, etc.) and live entertainment with big stars and low cost to watch. We can gamble if we want but sometimes we don't even drop a penny into their machines. The customers all look normal and the security is thick. All seem to be packed on any given day so I don't see how they will go broke unless more adjacent States start opening casinos and ours will get less traffic. That is the sum of my knowledge on casinos. TMI?
No vagrants, no casino in Michigan has ever closed- although they have cut back, and jobs are generated.. And nobody is dragging you into one against your will!
I voted no to the casinos - I wouldn't want to live anywhere close to the big 3, like you. All kinds of issues with that.
Still this post????
We have casinos here in Florida and they now have them in my home state of Indiana. I've never been to one but from what I understand, it's mostly senior citizens here in Florida. I don't think it contributes to the crime factor. As for me, I once played 25 cents in a slot machine in ND and won a buck fifty. I quit while I was ahead. LOL
All for it... I love gambling, I'm from the UK and live in the States now so I never understood the whole illegal thing in the first place!!!
Bring it... :o)
gamble gamble!!
i'm glad I (re)found you
